Wakerley and Barrowden Cricket Club

Firstly, I would like to wish you all a happy and prosperous new year from all at Wakerley & Barrowden Cricket Club. I know it’s a bit late, but it’s also very early for a cricket article! I just wanted to give a brief update on what is going on within the club.

Last season ended on a relative high when we realised we had missed out on promotion in our first season in the Rutland League by a measly two points! A thousand “if only’s” spring to mind, but, obviously, if it had happened we would have taken it gladly; on the other hand, not being promoted means we can be better prepared for this season, with the younger lads now being a year older and more experienced. Better to go up and stay up than come straight back down by over-reaching too early. We said at this stage last year we would be content with mid-table, so to miss out by two points exceeded all hopes.

The end of season dinner was another memorable night; regular readers of this drivel probably realise that Chris and Jonny deservedly picked up the bulk of the awards, but I expect them to have to raise their game this year to see off some greater challenges.

We are again in division 7 of the league, and have a good number of friendlies arranged. Unfortunately, the number of local clubs playing friendlies is diminishing, and we are having to travel further afield to get games, so expect a lot of new names on the fixture list.

This time last year we were in the process of ripping the buildings apart and giving the place in general a total re-furb. (If I remember correctly, the weather 12 months ago was a whole lot worse than we have had this year! Typical.) Because of the amount of work we completed, we haven’t had to do anything to date, but if the weather continues to be as mild as it has been, mowing will soon have to be started.

We are again producing the fixture poster, and have had an excellent response to our requests for adverts. Once again, Martin at the pub has been a great help, both in recruitment and financially, so thanks mate. At the moment, it is all but ready to go to print, but we are still looking for matchball sponsors at £10 a time, so if you would like to be involved, please get in contact. Because of the way we run things financially, it means we can keep individual playing expenses to a minimum; I know of one local club who charge £12 per game to play, with many more being £10. You would want some tea for that! We charge £5, £3.50 for anyone at school, college or Uni. We are more than happy to regularly play youngsters, which means quite often we make a loss, or just break even on teas. If we had to pay for balls etc, we would regularly run at a loss. Your support, whether as a non-playing member, a ball sponsor or by an advert on the poster, means we are on a decent footing.

We started net practice this week, 8th January, at the new Vale of Catmose sports hall, and very impressive it is too. We have booked 10 sessions to run weekly on a Sunday morning, from 10am until 12 noon. Everyone is welcome, so if you would like to give it a try please join us.
