Sixth Birthday Celebration

Barrowden Lunch Club celebrated their sixth birthday in style at the April gathering. Festive decorated tables, party hats, an excellent meal followed by birthday cake with firework candles.

Sheila Saunders was asked to propose a toast for the ongoing success of the Lunch Club. She reminded those enjoying the occasion that the Lunch Club was the first outcome of the Parish Plan published in April 2005.  Since then the club has met every four weeks with a very high quality menu on every occasion. The success of the club has been the number of volunteers who work in teams of four for each event. Throughout the six years there have been some changes in the teams, but there has continued to be a group of eighteen who are responsible for the regular meals and the Christmas celebration for senior citizens. A special meal in August is prepared and hosted by men.

One of the joys of the Club has been to welcome many newcomers to Barrowden who have appreciated meeting established residents and making new friends. Some have become members of the catering team. There are almost sixty who consider they are part of the lunch club with up to 36 being catered for on each occasion. Meals are also delivered to those who are unable to attend.

Special thanks to Thelma Fry who has been the treasurer from the outset and has gradually accepted even more responsibility. Currently she organises the yearly planning of dates and teams and produces the programme card for every member. She also represents the club on the Village Hall committee. For the birthday celebration Thelma made a superb cake and masterminded the day. Thank you Thelma.

Details of dates and how to reserve a place are published each month in the parish magazine. Anyone who is at home during the day and would like to come is most welcome.
