Frequently Asked Questions

Why are you looking to move the surgery?

The facilities at the current surgery are not adequate for local patients. There is currently no patient parking or disabled spaces. Access to the first floor is by stair lift only and general access around the surgery is difficult for patients with poor mobility. The consulting rooms are of an inadequate size and do not meet regulations recommended by the NHS. The waiting area is cramped, there is no additional space for additional community based services and the existing dispensing area is also very small. Toilet facilities are used by both sexes and are located in the heart of the building on a busy corridor and they don’t offer privacy or dignity for patients.

What are the benefits of the move for patients?

The move could provide spacious consulting rooms and treatment rooms; around 25 car parking spaces including  disabled spaces;  improved and increased waiting areas; dispensing services and disabled access with a lift to the first floor. We will be able to offer improved male and female toilet facilities. The new amenities will meet standards required by the NHS and provide us with more space for additional community based services in the future.

How does the space compare to the current surgery?

The new building would provide approximately 9000 square feet of space compared to 5000 square feet in the existing building. The move will provide more space for all of the services currently housed in the building. The new amenities will meet standards required by the NHS and provide us with more space for additional community based services in the future.

Where will I get my prescriptions from?

The new surgery will house a modern dispensary which will issue prescriptions.

There is a pharmacy opposite the current surgery. Would I have to go back into town to visit a pharmacy?

The new surgery will house a modern dispensary which will issue prescriptions. The practice is in discussions with a commercial pharmacy to rent space within the new facility in addition to the GP dispensary. The area is served well by local pharmacies and we will ensure patients are not left without this service nearby.

What are the parking facilities like and how much will it cost me?

The new car park will have approximately 25 spaces for patient parking. There are no plans to charge patients for parking. A number of the car parking spaces will be available for disabled patients and blue badge holders.

Is the new location on a bus route?

Yes, the Rutland Flyer (a Hail and Ride service) passes the new site once an hour in each direction. The practice is also in discussion with Rutland County Council to consider adapting the route to enable the bus to enter the proposed surgery car park.

The buses only run once an hour. Will you put on more buses?

The practice is currently in discussions with Rutland County Council to ensure consideration is given to  improving the service.

When is the move likely to happen?

The proposed move is subject to the outcome of our public consultation and engagement process; the provision of suitable public transport and gaining planning permission for the change of use of the proposed new location. We would like to complete the relocation process and be in our new premises by the end of 2012.

What happens next?

We will consult and engage extensively with all our patients, the general public and stakeholders within the practice catchment area. The practice will listen to the views generated by the consultation process and make an informed and fair decision on whether to proceed with this proposal.

PROPOSAL TO RELOCATE UPPINGHAM SURGERY

I am writing to you concerning the proposed plans to relocate Uppingham Surgery to a more suitable building within the town. We would like to hear your views on the proposed move of our practice. Your feedback will be used to help us provide a service that meets our patients’ needs.

The current Uppingham Surgery building was not intended to house a modern doctor’s surgery. As you may be aware, we currently cannot provide patient parking or disabled spaces for our patients. Access to the first floor of our building is by stair lift only and general access around the surgery is difficult for patients with poor mobility.

We are committed to providing the best possible service and environment for our patients however, there is very little scope to address these issues if the practice remains at the current premises and consequently we have been looking for suitable alternatives.

Currently we are looking at the National Farmers Union (NFU) building off Ayston Road LE15 9NX (near to the A47 roundabout) which has the potential to be converted into more spacious surgery with fit-for-purpose amenities. It could provide spacious consulting rooms and treatment rooms, adequate onsite parking for patients and disabled spaces, improved waiting area, dispensing services and disabled access with a lift to the first floor.

We have been working closely with the Primary Care Trust (PCT) for their initial views on our plans and on Monday January 30, 2012 the panel approved the proposed relocation subject to positive feedback from patients via a formal consultation process and with a second condition that the practice pursues with the council the possibility of rerouting the local bus service to travel past the new site.

We are very keen to hear your views on our plans and to ensure we are able to address any concerns or queries you may have. To have your say you can pick up a questionnaire from the practice or any of our branch sites. The questionnaire is available in regular and large font. You can also fill in our online survey at our website www.uppinghamsurgery.nhs.uk or by following this link direct to the questionnaire http://www.easygp.net/surveys/?survey_id=98 . The closing date for feedback is 1 May 2012.

We enclose a Frequently Asked Question sheet which may provide some answers to your initial questions about the proposed move. We look forward to hearing your comments.
