Barrowden Village Hall is 80 years old and continues to be a valuable asset to the village. Within the last 10 years a new kitchen has been fitted and within the last 5 years an extensive refurbishment programme has been undertaken. This has included the hall being decorated throughout, new curtains fitted, new disabled toilet facilities and a complete refurbishment of the ladies’ and gents’ toilets, new flooring has been fitted in the kitchen and toilets and supplementary heating has been installed in the main hall. A new piano has just been donated. All the old chairs have been replaced with upholstered ones, much to the delight of all our hirers. Also recently all the old mismatched crockery has been replaced with 80 new place settings, which complement the new cutlery.
The village hall, is a registered charity and is managed by its own committee, which meets on a regular basis to make sure all the facilities are in order and that all health and safety issues are adhered to. It has an entertainment’s licence and in addition is licensed for cinema and stage plays.
The facilities include: the main hall, which is licensed for 120 people, which can be used for a variety of different uses; the kitchen, which has an oven, hob, fridge, water heater, cutlery and crockery; a store cupboard and toilets. There is a first aid cupboard in the kitchen. In addition, there is a ramp, which enables easy access for those with disabilities or children in prams.
The hall is available for hire by anyone, whether or not they live in the village. It is currently hired, on a regular basis, by a variety of different village groups, which include the WI, Toddlers, CHAOS (youth group), Evergreens (Senior Citizens) and the Parish Council. In addition Astanga yoga takes place once a week. It is also hired for private parties and over the last 12 months has been hired for 2 wedding receptions and a Christening party. In conclusion the village hall continues to improve and this is reflected in the increase in usage over the last few years.
