Local Group Excursions

I am intending to provide a service organising day excursions and mini-breaks, either within the UK or further afield, and am trying to find out what would be of interest to local people.

I feel these trips would enable social groups from Barrowden, Wakerley and surrounding villages to enjoy outings together whilst benefiting from group discounts and a local pick-up point.

Initial feedback has been very favourable and a popular request from the Luncheon Club was The Chelsea Flower Show. This has now been arranged for Thursday 25th May and if anyone wishes to come along, please contact me by early March.

Other suggestions made were London shopping and theatre trips and Royal Ascot. I would be delighted to hear more ideas from villagers, and look forward to organising many enjoyable excursions in the future.

I have enjoyed the village website, but wonder if anyone would like to look at its history and the families who lived there?

My Cliff ancestors were born and lived in Barrowden for about 300 years - starting with Henry Cliff born 1575, I would love to contact anyone with any information on village history.  If wished, I can supply a family tree which shows all their marriages until about 1850. Who knows, some of these families may still be there!

Sincerely

Family name— “Wilson”

I have recently started a family search and find that my Great-great-grandfather and Great-grandfather were bakers in Barrowden and Wakerley.  Great-grandfather was Daniel Wade Wilson, wife Maria.  He had a son called Josiah who  was a baker living in Wakerley when he married my  Great-grandmother, Nancy Rolles in Wakerley 1876.  I'm unsure how and when Nancy Rolles moved to Wakerley. They then appear to have moved to Richmond in Surrey, where my Grandmother was born and married my Grandfather - Alfred Andrews.  My father and brothers and sisters were all born in Richmond.  My father’s youngest sister remembers an Aunt visiting them every Christmas from the Uppingham area.  I haven't yet been able to trace back further but would love to find out when and when they moved to London.  I wonder if there are any relatives still in the area. Sadly there is no 1981 census available so I do not know where they were after 1871.

If there is anyone who can throw any light on this for me or tell me of any publication on local history, I'd be interested.  I now live in Nottinghamshire and intend to visit the villages soon - weather permitting!!!

Many thanks for any help.

Cliffe Family

I noticed that a relative of mine, Janey Hawkins, had left a request on the message board. I also am interested in finding information about my Cliffe ancestors from Barrowden, Lyndon, Manton & Pilton. My direct ancestors originated in Barrowden from before the 16th Century and didn’t leave until the 1850s. There was at least a 300 year period of Rutland residency. I would be most interested in finding out where they lived, where they worked, where they are buried and where they worshipped.

Can anyone help me with any of the above information or does anyone know someone I could write to who may know this information.

Many Thanks and Regards Greg Cliffe
